The short version: Crab Classic is a mainstream American refrigerated imitation crab made from MSC-certified wild Alaska pollock. Its standout fact is on the label: it is certified gluten-free, made without wheat, which most crab sticks can’t claim. It is not shellfish-free — it contains a little real king crab meat plus crab and lobster extracts. Like other American-style surimi it is built as a soft, ready-to-use recipe ingredient rather than a firm Japanese-style stick.

What’s in the package
Trans-Ocean’s published ingredient list for Crab Classic (leg style) reads: Alaska pollock (MSC certified), water, egg whites, pea starch, sugar, sorbitol, potato starch, and 2% or less of golden king crab meat, natural and artificial flavor (with extracts of blue crab, snow crab, lobster and pollock), refined pollock oil, rice wine, modified tapioca starch, sea salt, carrageenan, yam flour, potassium chloride, disodium inosinate, sodium pyrophosphate, carmine and paprika.

- Other label claims: MSC-certified pollock and the American Heart Association Heart-Check mark; the added pollock oil gives about 100 mg of omega-3 EPA+DHA per 3 oz, according to the company.

Texture and flavor
Crab Classic follows the American refrigerated style: tender rather than snappy strands, a mild sweetness from the sugar and sorbitol, and a crab note boosted by the real crab and extracts. That profile suits creamy and dressed dishes — kani salad, hot dip, seafood salad — better than dishes where the stick has to hold a firm shape, such as tempura. For that kind of job, a firmer Japanese-style frozen kanikama (Osaki, Shirakiku) is the usual choice.
Flake vs. chunk vs. leg style
- Leg style is the most versatile: shred it for salads, halve it for mac and cheese, use it whole in a California roll.
- Flake style saves knife work in deli seafood salad and dips — the same product in pre-broken form.
- Chunk style suits crab cakes and pasta, where you want pieces that survive folding.
How it compares
Against Louis Kemp Crab Delights, its main supermarket rival, the decisive difference is gluten: the standard Crab Delights flake lists wheat starch, Crab Classic does not. Against Japanese-style frozen kanikama it trades firmness for convenience — it’s refrigerated, needs no thawing, and is sold in ordinary US supermarkets. Verdict
Good fit for: gluten-free households, everyday salads, dips and casseroles, and anyone who wants surimi without a special trip.
Look elsewhere for: shellfish allergies and kosher kitchens (it contains real crab and lobster extract), and texture-led dishes like tempura.
